What is a responsive website?

April 24, 2018
Have you ever viewed a website on your mobile phone which was impossible to read without using your fingers to pinch the screen and zoom into the content? We’ve all been there… Trying hopelessly to navigate your way around the website, swiping left, right, up, down, pinching, squinting and then giving up and moving on. If you’ve experienced this then you have come across a website which isn’t responsive.

What is a responsive website?

A responsive website has been designed to alter its layout depending on what screen size the visitor is using. Whether the website is being viewed from a desktop computer, tablet or mobile phone the content will be easy to read and navigate.

What are the benefits of responsive design?

Besides from the obvious benefit of the visitor being able to read the content easily, Google ranks responsive websites much higher in search results. So if you want to be found on Google then responsive is a must!

Some info from Google:

94% of people with smartphones search for local information on their phones. Interestingly, 77% of mobile searches occur at home or at work, places where desktop computers are likely to be present.

Who builds responsive websites?

With smart phones being so prevalent in this day and age, responsive design should always be included in your website no matter who is building it or what platform they’re using. It’s always worth checking with your developer during the quoting process but you should find that responsive design will be standard.
